Need your opinion. Last Pass or 1Password ? #security

I have been with 1Password since the beginning and am happy with it. I spent a couple of years with a smaller password manager, but it didn’t work for me. I do ask myself if I want to move, for example to Apple’s improved Keychain, but for now 1Password just works for me and feels safe.

1P has, at least IMO, a better security history. Check on Last Password breaches… Not horrible but worse than 1P so for me the choice is easy. Plus it is great for families.

@ohBananaJoe @ronguest @crossingthethreshold @pratik thanks all. For those using on iOS, do you use it alongside or instead of apples password management ?

I ended up turning the iCloud password management off. It got messy having stuff in both places. Also you end up having to tell iOS which password manager to use multiple times which, at least for me, was unnecessary.

Only 1Password. I still have iCloud turned on, I actually didn’t know that I could turn it off until I read this thread, and so I might explore that (I always have to tell iCloud to ignore this or that site).

Untill last week I would have been 100% 1Password, but they announced some crypto related deals and now I’m looking at options.

@pimoore Used it long ago, remember it being rather clunky. Planning to review what’s available soon.

@rom been thinking about doing something like that myself.
I like 1 Password - but their direction is not sitting well with me - and though Keychain still isnt a real app - it seems to be heading in that direction?

@rom let me know how that goes. I am interested in your password generation alternative etc

@johnphilpin I spent the entire day weeding out the iCloud Keychain – deleting old accounts, syncing TOTPs, and have turned off 1Password Safari extension and iPhone Autofill Password for 1Password. Let’s see how this goes. Note that I have not deleted 1Password (yet?) because the backup codes are stored there, as I don’t want to store it in Secure Notes.

If you’re Apple-only, and for personal use, Keychain is fine. The biggest strength alternatives have are family-based features, for which Apple is sorely lacking in comparison.
I’ve come to think of password management in the same way as personal cloud-based document management; a feature, not a product.

I use LP mostly but I’m interested in cleaning up my Keychain/iCloud passwords for personal devices and then just use LP for work device.

@UndamnedOne @simonwoods @pimoore @rom @JohnPhilpin @sgtstretch @mcg @rogerscrafford @crossingthethreshold @pratik @ronguest @ohBananaJoe the ICloud key chain is an option, it is the family management and non website passwords that become an issue. I suppose it could be used in conjunction with secure notes in iOS too. All gets messy, when trying to convince the family to be more secure without the hurdles. 🔐

@sgtstretch what would you use as a generator for non web passwords or would that not bother you ?

@pratik 👍🏽I am going to take a look at the subscription. Just realised our gas and electric is about to double in price in the UK, so need to be careful with subscriptions 🧐😏

@pratik Bills are going up because the energy price cap - the maximum price suppliers in England, Wales and Scotland can charge households - is being raised by 54%. www.bbc.co.uk/news/busi… The cost of energy is being raised around the world. It’s up to governments to control it. You will eventually see a rise too.

I’ve already seen gas prices rising here in the States. Will definitely need to budget a little more.

@skoobz it’s totally mad. A mid sized house will go from £1800 a year for electricity and gas to £3800-4500. Plus, our National insurance contributions will be rising in April, cost of fuel (car and as you call it gas) is £1.50 a litre / £8.20 a gallon lol.

@pimoore +1 for StrongBox. Great app at a great price. This is what I personally use with the KeepassXC file stored on a self-hosted nextcloud instance, but I assume if you already trust Apple it could be stored on iCloud or similiar. Its a bit more work, but keeps me more in control.

@pimoore I created the keepass vault on linux with AES 256/Argon2d. Those were the defaults that keepass recomended. I then have StrongBox sync/open directly using Webdav. I do not use an access key, but I make sure my keypass password is very strong. Although I use a good PIN/thumprint for Strongbox so I don’t have to always type it in.

I tend to use the iCloud Keychain as an adjunct (?) supplement (?) to third party products.
I’ll point out that if you have stuff in 1Password and think you might want to export everything for importing into another app, your 1Password attachments won’t make the jump.
