Tip Tip Away

This article “Should you Tip” reminds me of a couple of occasions when we have been out with friends.

The new law means the service charge must now be paid to staff.

About time!

One couple said after spending £360, between the six of us and being the only people in the restaurant, that no tip is required where as another couple insisted.

An occasion in a coffee shop in India, where the barista chased me out the door to tell me she is not allowed to accept a tip and then an occasion at JFK, where the waitress took a baguette and placed it on a plate for me. As I did not tip for my ($19) baguette in 2007, she ridiculed me in front of everyone for being a typical Brit.

Upon returning to NYC, prior to the pandemic with my family. I would tip the doorman, driver and in restaurants. This time they either accepted it or looked disgusted that it was not over 20%. You will never keep everyone happy!
